Wings for Life World Run Houston

The Wings for Life World Run is back again, Sunday, May 8th starting at 6 AM at The Water Works in Buffalo Bayou Park. 

Like last year, each participant will use their own mobile device with the Wings for Life app to track their mileage and alert them as to when they are eliminated from the race.

If this is your first Wings for Life, this unique race format is a global elimination happening simultaneously around the world. Runners, walkers, and wheelchairs will start at exactly the same time around the globe (6 AM in Houston). Some locations will have actual "catcher cars", while others like Houston will use the app, which start 30-minutes after the runners and slowly increase the pace until everyone is eliminated.

Some standard distances and rough times/paces at which the catcher car will pass (the registration page has a calculator to play with):

5km: 51 minutes (16:53/mi) 10km: 1h10m (11:46/mi) Half: 1h54 (8:46/mi) Full: 3h06m (7:05/mi) 50k: 3h26 (6:40/mi)

As you can see, this event is open to all paces. For once the faster runners will finish last! This is a fun event, a good way to get your long (or short) run or walk for the day, you do not have to be competitive. Red Bull and other event amenities are included.

The main event for Houston is on the Bayou, running around the pathway system, but a second event more suitable for wheelchairs will be at the University of Houston track. Runners that wish to do both can complete the Bayou/Track loop with a few laps on the track before heading back. Since individuals are using their own device you can essentially run anywhere you want with no set course.
